While attending community college at Pierce in Lakewood, Washington, my Digital Design professor, Brian Martin, referred me to the Web Department to fill an urgent job opening as Assistant Web Manager. I had previous experience doing freelance web design and I was assisting the professors in class as an unofficial teaching assistant. The Web Department hired me right away. I learned a lot about standards and accessibility in this position. The college was using custom WordPress installations for each department to manage content on the back-end and we designed front-end PHP templates to pull articles in as static content. It was quite a mash-up. I performed a lot of daily content maintenance and content conversion/creation. This was my introduction to designing and developing in a team environment. I never looked back. I am still working in Higher Education on even bigger Web teams. As a bonus, I got paid very well and my professor gave me internship credits.
